Tom Gale

George William Tom Gale (known as Tom).

Tom was born in Broughton to Elizabeth and Henry Gale on 21st June 1899. He was their 3rd child. He had 2 older sisters Nellie May and Ada Beatrice and 2 younger stepsisters Emily Florence and Edna Dorothy Glazier. His father died soon after his birth and his mother remarried to Charlie Glazier.

He joined the Devonshire Regiment before transferring to 12th Bn Gloucestershire Regiment. Tom was killed in action on 23rd August 1918 and is buried in Queens Cemetery, Bucquoy, France. At the time of his death his family were living in Queenwood Road, Broughton.

His name appears at the bottom left corner of the village War Memorial in St. Mary’s church, Broughton.
